Asheville is a city in, & the county seat of, Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. Located at the confluence of the French Broad & Swannanoa rivers, it is the largest city in Western North Carolina, & the state's 11th-most populous city. Before the arrival of the Europeans, the land where Asheville now exists lay within the boundaries of the Cherokee Nation, which had homelands in modern western North & South Carolina, southeastern Tennessee, & northeastern Georgia. In 1900, Asheville was the third-largest city in the state, behind Wilmington & Charlotte. Asheville is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains. (learn more)
